Track & Field Compete at JDL Early Bird Invitational

On Sunday, Charlotte's track & field team competed at the JDL Early Bird Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This closed out the weekend for the team, which started with the Liberty Kickoff on Friday and the Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday. The team competed well on Sunday, with many Niners having podium finishes at the meet.

Sarah Brown took home second place honors in the pole vault. Brown's vault of 3.95m (12'11.5") was also broke the previous meet record of 3.80m. Alicia Johnson finished in third place in the event with a vault of 3.65m (11'11.75")

Ta-Halia Fairman, Aniya Matthews, and Joyasia Smith swept the 60m dash for the Niners. Matthews and Smith with set personal best in the race, with Matthews setting a time of 7.59 and Smith setting a time of 7.60.

Ja'Neya Hammond and Jurnee Coleman finished in third and fourth respectively in the 60m hurdles. Hammond (8.87) and Coleman (8.97) both set personal bests in the 60m hurdles on the day as well.

Chaunesse Barringer and Jurnee Coleman took home first and second in long jump for Charlotte on the day. Barringer, a freshman at Charlotte, won her first collegiate event with her jump of 5.80m (19'0.5"). Coleman set another personal best in the long jump as well, with a jump of 5.71m (18'9")

Shyheim Scotland won the high jump with a jump of 2.10m (6'10.75"). He was joined in the top five by Carson Wolter, who finished fifth place with a jump of 1.90m (6'2.75"). Wolter also took home fifth place in the long jump for Charlotte as well. Avery Scott and Mikai Hunt finished third and fifth respectively in the Triple Jump, with Scott jumping 14.51m (47'7.25") and Hunt jumping 14.20m (46'7.25"). Nick Callis (fourth place) and Tommy Duke (fifth place) got top-5 finishes in the pole vault for Charlotte. Duke's vault of 4.25m (13'11.25") set a new personal indoor best in his time at Charlotte.

Sidney Littlejohn finished in second place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.14. Jaiden Ventour competed in his first event at Charlotte, and finished in fourth place in the 60m dash. Ventour finished the event with a time of 6.94, which set a new 60m personal best for the runner as well.

Up Next

Charlotte will take a break before the team travels to Blacksburg, Virginia to compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational from January 13-14.
