FOXBOROUGH, Mass.—The Carolina Panthers will commence their pre-season under new head coach Dave Canales on Thursday night. The game against the New England Patriots marks a period of transition for both teams, each featuring first-time head coaches.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm EST.

Here are five key aspects to observe during the game:

**Head Coaches in Action**

Both the Panthers and the Patriots have appointed first-time head coaches: Dave Canales and Jerod Mayo. These experienced professionals are now tasked with new responsibilities. "Calling the plays, handling the exchanges with the officials; 'Do we decline this penalty? Do we not?' I'm excited about all those things," Canales stated earlier this week. Despite having former head coaches Jim Caldwell and Dom Capers on staff, procedural challenges are anticipated as Canales and Mayo adapt to their roles.

**Quarterback Competition**

With Bryce Young sidelined and Andy Dalton injured, quarterback duties will be handled by Jack Plummer and Jake Luton. Plummer has been part of the team since April, while Luton brings four years of league experience. Their performance could determine who secures a potential quarterback spot under a new league rule allowing an emergency third quarterback from the practice squad on game day rosters.

**Running Backs' Opportunity**

Canales emphasizes running the ball and maintaining a deep roster of running backs. With seven active running backs in training camp (plus rookie Jonathon Brooks recovering from a knee injury), each player has had moments to showcase their skills. This game offers them an opportunity to solidify their roles.

**Kicker Competition**

Eddy Piñeiro and Harrison Mevis have been alternating kicking duties during training camp. Piñeiro holds a career average of 89 percent on field goals, while rookie Mevis aims to prove his NFL readiness. "He's got a really live leg and it'd be cool to see a pretty long-range field goal at some point," Canales remarked regarding Mevis.

**Pre-Snap Discipline**

Following Fan Fest in Clemson last week, Canales highlighted the need to address pre-snap penalties. While starters like Young won't play against the Patriots, improving pre-snap discipline remains crucial for the entire roster.
