CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers practiced with their smallest group of the year on Tuesday following league-mandated roster cutdowns. Practicing with an initial 53-man roster, the team was joined by a few injury-designated players as spectators. The Panthers had to release 37 players as part of this process.
"I don't think there's really anything you could do to get used to it, make it any less impactful," quarterback Bryce Young said Tuesday afternoon. "It's a tough, tough business. I pray for everyone who, you know, a lot of people's futures are up in the air. There's a lot of uncertainty with people and that's just, that's just a tough—people have families, people have wives, kids, loved ones who depend on them and, again, it's a tough part of the business."
Despite the cuts, the Panthers resumed practice, which lasted longer than scheduled. With their season opener against the New Orleans Saints over a week away, Young referred to this week as a "bonus week." All players on the initial roster were present except defensive tackle Jaden Crumedy (ankle) and tight end Tommy Tremble.
Cornerback Mike Jackson joined the team on Tuesday after being acquired via trade from the Seattle Seahawks last Thursday. Jackson did not participate in Saturday's final preseason game against Buffalo due to the quick turnaround but saw his first action with his new team on Tuesday.
The roster is expected to change further with waiver claims and will expand when the practice squad is set on Wednesday. Each change impacts the game plan as coaches work to prepare all potential players.
Young acknowledged he has no involvement in waiver claims but is prepared to assist new pass-catchers if necessary. "From my perspective...it's my job as well to make sure that I'm having conversations, we're going over things," he said. "I'll do whatever it takes to get us to the best position we can come next week."
Receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., heading into his fourth season, was left off the initial 53-man roster—a cut that Young found particularly difficult. Marshall will be eligible for the practice squad if he clears waivers.
"The business of it—you never know where people end up," Young said about Marshall. "But that's someone I believe in tremendously...I have utmost confidence [he will] have success in the future."
Corner Jaycee Horn demonstrated versatility during practice by catching balls one-handed during stretches and acting as a ball carrier during defensive drills.
