As the Carolina Panthers navigate the holiday season, they are becoming familiar with a new spirit on the field: the "Carolina Reaper." This nickname has been bestowed upon quarterback Bryce Young, who has been instrumental in doubling the team's win total from last season and challenging divisional leaders. Young's recent performance against the Arizona Cardinals, which eliminated them from playoff contention, earned him Pro Football Focus's highest quarterback grade for Week 16.
Despite his success, Young remains humble about his new moniker. "I definitely can't control nicknames," he said. "Reaper is a little like evil, so I don't know. I try not to be evil." His natural reaction to taking a big hit during Sunday's game was simply instinctual. "We all get hit; that's part of the sport," Young explained.
The Panthers are also celebrating Chuba Hubbard's recognition as NFC Offensive Player of the Week following his outstanding performance against the Cardinals. Head coach Dave Canales praised Hubbard for exemplifying consistency and hard work, noting that Hubbard would credit his teammates for their support.
Looking ahead to Week 17, Canales will return to Tampa Bay, where he previously served as a coordinator before joining the Panthers. Reflecting on his time there, Canales expressed gratitude for the opportunities and friendships formed in Tampa.
Former Panthers coach Ron Rivera was present at Sunday's game and received an ovation from fans. Although he didn't have a chance to speak with Canales, Rivera has been supportive throughout the season.
With Christmas approaching, players will have Wednesday off to spend time with family before returning to practice on Thursday. Safety Demani Richardson plans to enjoy some home-cooked meals if teammate Ja'Tavion Sanders hosts another gathering like Thanksgiving.
Injury updates reveal that receiver Xavier Legette participated in Tuesday's walk-through practice and may play against Tampa Bay this Sunday.
