FOIA Request Sent to Mecklenburg County Election Department Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Mecklenburg County Election Department on February 5, 2025. The request was made by South Charlotte Today, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

In the FOIA request, we asked for a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1. We requested this information preferably in an electronic format for ease of use and accessibility.

The specific details requested for each candidate include their first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation. In addition to these basic details about each candidate's campaign, we also requested contact information for each candidate including their address, phone number, and email address.

As members of South Charlotte Today, we believe that access to public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information to the community, we have requested a fee waiver as media professionals.

We remain committed to keeping our readers informed about local governmental affairs and will continue to pursue necessary information through legal channels such as FOIA requests.
