Charlotte FC has announced the acquisition of defender Souleyman Doumbia on loan from Standard Liège, a Belgian football club. The loan agreement is set to last until December 31, 2025. The transfer is pending the approval of a P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Doumbia will take up an international roster slot in Charlotte FC's lineup for the 2025 season.
General Manager Zoran Krneta commented on the move, stating, "Left back was one of the positions we needed to strengthen this transfer window, and we’re delighted to welcome Souleyman to Charlotte FC. He brings experience from top European leagues like Ligue 1 and the Belgian Pro League, and his versatility and technical ability makes him a great addition to our back line."
Doumbia's career includes time with various clubs across Europe. After graduating from Paris Saint-Germain's academy, he moved to Bari in Italy’s second division before joining Grasshoppers Club Zurich in Switzerland. During his tenure at Grasshoppers, he made 52 appearances which led to a transfer to Stade Rennais in France’s Ligue 1 where he won the Coupe de France in 2019.
Internationally, Doumbia has represented Ivory Coast at both youth and senior levels. He debuted for Ivory Coast's senior team in June 2019 and participated in the Africa Cup of Nations that year alongside teammate Wilfried Zaha.
