The Carolina Panthers have reached an agreement with running back Rico Dowdle on a one-year contract. This move aims to bolster their backfield, demonstrating the team's commitment to enhancing their running game.

Rico Dowdle, originally from Asheville and a former University of South Carolina player, is returning to his home state. Last season, Dowdle had an impressive performance with the Dallas Cowboys, accumulating 1,079 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 39 passes for 249 yards and scored three additional touchdowns. His total yardage from scrimmage was ranked 20th in the league.

The Panthers already have Chuba Hubbard as their starting running back. Hubbard finished last season with 1,366 yards from scrimmage, placing him 15th in the league rankings. The team extended Hubbard's contract last year to secure his role for the future.

Despite having Hubbard as a key player, the Panthers aim to maintain depth in their running back position. They drafted Jonathon Brooks in the second round last year; however, Brooks is expected to miss most of this season due to another ACL injury.

In related roster moves, the Panthers released Miles Sanders on Tuesday.
