The Carolina Panthers took a breather after an intense first week of free agency. From March 7-12, the team made significant moves by retaining eight players, signing seven new ones, and releasing one. A key highlight was cornerback Jaycee Horn's four-year extension.
The Panthers aimed to strengthen their roster, particularly focusing on the defensive line and ensuring depth in various positions. With 66 players currently under contract, they plan to add nine draft picks and several undrafted rookies to reach the offseason roster limit.
Future flexibility remains a priority for the Panthers as they stabilize their roster under the salary cap. Of the current contracts, only 16 extend beyond 2027, with many set to expire this year.
Quarterbacks Bryce Young, Andy Dalton, and Jack Plummer are under contract. Dalton recently signed a two-year deal in February.
In terms of offensive linemen, keeping Austin Corbett was pivotal. The team retained Cade Mays and Brady Christensen while adding Yosh Nijman and Chandler Zavala.
For tight ends, Ja'Tavion Sanders shows potential as an every-down player alongside Tommy Tremble.
Wide receivers like Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette remain crucial. However, additions are expected given the current contracts' expiration timelines.
Running backs include Chuba Hubbard and Rico Dowdle, who provide stability despite Jonathon Brooks' injury concerns.
Defensive linemen acquisitions like Tershawn Wharton were essential for addressing gaps in the roster.
Outside linebackers such as Patrick Jones II were added due to previous high turnover rates at this position.
Linebackers include Josey Jewell and Christian Rozeboom among others for improved depth.
Cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson lead a group that aims for continuity following last season's success in pass breakups.
Safety positions require attention with only Demani Richardson and Tre'von Moehrig currently contracted.
Special teams see Matthew Wright returning alongside punter Sam Martin; however, competition is anticipated with potential young additions during the offseason. Long snapper JJ Jansen continues on a familiar one-year deal basis.
