As NFL teams prepare for the upcoming draft, connections between colleges and professional teams are becoming increasingly significant. The Carolina Panthers have drawn heavily from the University of South Carolina, currently featuring five former Gamecocks on their roster: Jaycee Horn, Xavier Legette, D.J. Wonnum, Jadeveon Clowney, and newly signed free agent Rico Dowdle.
Debo Williams, a linebacker participating in the Gamecocks' pro day, expressed his awareness of this connection. "Got them all on social media and stuff like that," he said. "I congratulated Jaycee Horn for his great addition and what he was able to do." Williams hopes the Panthers will continue drafting players from South Carolina.
Williams and fellow linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. participated in drills led by Panthers linebackers coach Pete Hansen and assistant coach Mayur Chaudhari. Knight reflected on the experience saying, "Definitely took away some things that you can add to your game."
The event attracted many NFL representatives due to both historical ties with South Carolina and the presence of standout safety Nick Emmanwori. Emmanwori impressed at the combine with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash and other notable performances but continued to participate actively in drills during pro day.
Emmanwori's determination was evident as he repeated drills when dissatisfied with his performance. He described this attitude as a "dawg mentality," adding that if something wasn't right, he'd "come back, do it again."
Emmanwori is aware of his potential draft position as well as the Panthers' interest in Gamecock players: "The Panthers... they're building a Gamecock squad up there," he noted.
Other talents were also showcased at the pro day including defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway who sought to demonstrate both athletic ability and personal character during interactions with team representatives.
Linebacker Demetrius Knight emphasized continuous improvement after completing an impressive season with 82 tackles among other stats. He viewed Tuesday's session as another step toward achieving future goals: "Never being content with myself... we're going to continue to stack this day Pro Day until we get drafted."
