Former Carolina Panthers linebacker Dean Wells passed away Thursday morning at the age of 54 after battling cancer for two years. Wells, who started his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks in 1993, later joined the Panthers in 1999. Under the guidance of linebackers coach Sam Mills, Wells contributed to developing a strong linebacker group that included rookie Dan Morgan in 2001. Over his nine-year NFL career, Wells achieved 529 tackles, 2.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and three interceptions.
A University of Kentucky alumnus, Wells set a single-season sack record in 1992 with 10.0 sacks and a game record with 5.0 sacks, which remains unbroken.
Throughout his cancer battle, Wells maintained a positive outlook, comparing his approach to his football career. He told On3 in April, "Show me who to tackle and I can do that," adding that his fight against cancer was in the hands of doctors and God.
In his final year, Wells focused on raising awareness about ways people could support cancer fighting efforts, emphasizing the importance of donating blood, supporting cancer research initiatives, and joining the bone marrow registry.
Wells is survived by his wife, Lisa, and two sons. Condolences are extended to his family and loved ones.
